Don’t Call My Baby Ugly – Work Strategies for Managing-Up

How many of you have wanted to tell your boss or bosses boss that they are wrong, do not know what they are doing or something much worse?  At some point probably most people have dreamed of doing this and for the adventure seekers they have actually done it with mixed results, probably mostly “crash and burn.”

Now if you think about it, would you like people calling your baby ugly?  Would you?  And if they did call your baby ugly, how would you treat them, what would you say and most importantly what might you do?  Probably many scenarios are going through your head right now.  Slow and painful, fast and furious and many other movie titles might come to mind.

So in lieu of becoming a casualty in an action movie, what are a few simple strategies for not calling someone’s baby ugly.  Here are three to get you started.

1.     Find something in common with your managers and talk about that
2.     Invite them to coffee, breakfast, lunch or even dinner and get to know them
3.     Say nice things to them and praise them on the things you like about them

3 Tips for Better Time & Life Management

Time management is really about life management.  Want to have a better life?  Follow the 3 practical tips below.

1.     Lean into Family and Friends – Studies show that the happiest people, who lived the longest, leaned into family and not just work, money or success.  Go out on date nights, have your “partners back” and be nice to each other.  Figure out ways to spend more quality time with the ones you love.
2.     Do the important and urgent things first and then the important and not urgent in that order.  Get time back by delegating, eliminating or automating tasks.  Saying no to one thing is saying yes to something else.
3.     Write to-do lists in order of importance and do not use your email box as your to-do list.  A great trick is to put a post it note on your computer with your to-do list and replace it everyday.  At the top of the post it remind yourself not to make your email in-box your to-do list.

Put these tips into practice for at least six months and they will become habits.  Best of all you may have a longer and happier life.

If Walls Could Talk - How to Improve Your Company Culture

If the walls at companies could talk what would they say?  The stories told about companies can be a good or bad reflection on the corporate culture. Should leaders be concerned about the stories told?
The President of Aflac (a large U.S. based supplemental insurance company) commented that when there was the large earthquake in Japan several years ago, as people were fleeing from Japan the Chairman of their company was flying to Japan to help and support the employees and customers. Japan is AFLAC’s largest market and this story speaks volumes about their corporate culture of caring.  This story helps Aflac inside and outside the company.
On the opposite side, there are countless stories of managers yelling at their people, firing people right before the holidays, and working people so hard they burn-out and leave.  These stories can hurt the people, morale, retention and the top and bottom line.
Make sure you are the leader that inspires good stories to be told. It is the right thing to do and it is also good for business. Good stories lead to better employee retention, attracting better talent, productivity, happy employees/customers and more sales/profits. Good stories tend to equate to good culture and the opposite is also true.

If Walls Could Talk

Mom's Tips to her Teenage daughter on making a career choice.

It is never too late to start talking about career choices and dreams. One day our little girl turns all of the sudden in this beautiful amazing tennager with all the questions you can't even imagine, tons of ideas and different views about the world and YES what a different world this is!

Possibilities are endless which is great and also can create some confusion when the choices have to be narrowed to a number close to 1.

Here are some points to start ahead.

* Even if your daughter is a pre-teen or a teenager and may not be ready to embrace a career choice, doesn't mean that she can't be exposed to all the career possibilities and get to explore all of the different occupations available, this way she'll realize there's many options available to her.

*  Even if you think a career is not a good fit for her, let her explore it and come to her own conclusions. The last thing she'll need is to be discouraged.

* Connections at work, relatives and aquaintances are a good way to let your teen understand and interact with people with different backgrounds and life experiences. It for sure is an enrichment encounter that'll she'll benefit from.

 * Take advantage of the "Take Our daughters and Sons to Work Day". It is held annually on the fourth Thursday of April and it can not only help them understand what you do when you are at work, also make you more appreciated by all your effort and create a stronger bonding with you.

* Last and most important, Have Fun, Have Fun, Have Fun!!

Is Humility a Strength or Weakness in Leaders? What do you think?

There is a paradigm that leaders need to be aggressive, avoid admitting mistakes and talk more than listen. Does this make for better leaders? Study after study shows that the best leaders have high emotional intelligence and are humble.
In the book “Good to Great” the top leaders “Level 5” are humble and care more about the people (cause) than about themselves. In the book “Legacy” about one of the most winning teams of all times, the All Blacks Rugby Team from New Zealand, the 2 top leaders of the team show their humility by sweeping the floor before a game.
Humility is a great value and a tremendous strength in leaders. Humble leaders learn from their mistakes, get better by auto-reflecting and let others shine above themselves. Think about making humility in your leaders part of your corporate culture. There is power in being less powerful. Be humble and encourage this behavior in others.

Frustrated with Your Company’s Stock Price?

Since 2009, a portfolio of Fortune’s “Best Companies to Work For” outperformed the general stock market by 84.2 percent, while a similar portfolio of Glassdoor’s “Best Places to Work” outperformed the overall market by 115.6 percent.

One of the most important factors to be a best place to work is corporate culture.  A focus on corporate culture (living the purpose, values and behaviors) increases employee satisfaction, retention, attracts better talent, increases revenue/profits, promotes engagement, productivity and results

Are you frustrated and would you like your stock to increase in price?   Focus on company culture and become a culture-driven company.  Your stock is already on the rise if you do this.
