Great Leaders Focus On This First

It is common for leaders to focus on strategy or structure as their first priority.  STOP.

Great leaders know that a focus on people (culture) will lead to, much better results.  They know that culture equals people. More specifically, they know that culture is about people’s attitudes (values) and behaviors and that "Culture Eats Strategy for Breakfast".

In the popular TV show on CNBC called “The Profit”, Marcus Lemonis focuses on people first, processes second and product third.  This order is key and an important reason why he can turn around businesses so quickly.  The focus on people is what culture is all about.  If you focus on people, and the attitudes and behaviors you want, and make culture your first priority, everything else seems to work itself out.

Why are some companies and leaders so successful?  The answer is people.  Although most of us know this, we sometimes forget and worse than that, fail to put this into practice.

So how do you start to work with your people/culture?  The first is to know, acknowledge and decide to focus on the people/culture.  The second is to consider getting professional corporate culture/human behaviors consultants to help you gather some core beliefs/attitudes/values and develop specific observable behaviors around them.  The third is to communicate and then train, train, train the attitudes until they become habits in about 6 months to three years after you start.  Building habits takes time.  The payoff is huge though.  Talk about an incredible ROI.

Knowing the values and behaviors you want will also help you "Get the wrong people off the bus and the right people on the bus, in the right seats".  This is mentioned as a key to success in the book "Good to Great".

The most important thing is to start, keep it going and emulate the attitudes and behaviors you want.  The rest will happen with time, practice and hard work.  Facilitators and human behavior trainers are recommended to make this happen in a timely and cost effective way.  For more information please click on the link below.
